Drive Sullivan Avenue on a Saturday morning this August and you'll catch two smells in the same quarter mile: fresh-ground coffee drifting out of a shop that wasn't open yet in January, and birria simmering down the street at a taqueria that's been serving South Windsor since March. If your mental map of eating out in South Windsor still has one pin on it, centered somewhere near the Shops at Evergreen Walk, that map is behind.
But the story isn't that everything moved to Sullivan Avenue. It's that South Windsor's new restaurants are landing in four separate places at once, and only one of them is actually inside the shopping center you already think of as the town's food hub. That's the part worth understanding if you live here and want to know where to actually go.
The One New Name Inside Evergreen Walk Itself
Start with what's changing at the Shops at Evergreen Walk, because the honest answer is: not much. Qdoba Mexican Eats is moving into the former Moe's Southwest Grill space, taking over roughly 2,700 square feet at the shopping center. That's the extent of the turnover reported there this year. Qdoba hadn't confirmed an opening date when local news asked.
Everything else at Evergreen Walk is holding its position. Burtons Grill & Bar is still running lunch, dinner, and weekend brunch out of its space at 100 Evergreen Way. Red Heat Tavern is still the coal-fired comfort food option a few doors down. That stability is the point. Evergreen Walk isn't where the churn is happening. It's the one address in this story that looks the same today as it did at the start of the year.
Sullivan Avenue Filled Two Storefronts In Four Months
The actual movement is two miles south, on a stretch of Sullivan Avenue that used to be mostly pass-through traffic. Two independently owned businesses opened within a month of each other, in adjoining storefronts.
The Wicked Press, a coffee shop and book-themed retail concept at 948 Sullivan Ave, held its grand opening on Saturday, April 18, 2026, after working through town and health inspections that had pushed the date back from an earlier March target. Owner Alyssa Smith spent the previous year and a half running the concept as a pop-up, setting up a tent at farmers markets and vendor fairs before finding a permanent home on Sullivan. Asked about competing with bigger bookstores that have been closing in recent years, she put it simply:
"We're not just a bookstore, and we're not just a coffee shop, we're both."
The shop settled into regular hours after opening: 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday and Tuesday, 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday through Friday, and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekends.
Just down the street at 944 Sullivan Ave, Three Amigos Mexican Taqueria opened on March 20, 2026, about a month ahead of the Wicked Press. Reviewers have called out the portion sizes on burritos and the birria tacos specifically, and the restaurant runs Sunday hours from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. with longer weekday hours the rest of the week. Two independent operators, neither one a national chain, opening on the same short stretch within weeks of each other, is a different kind of signal than a single new tenant filling a vacancy. It suggests Sullivan Avenue has enough foot traffic now to support small operators betting on a storefront rather than a drive-thru lane.
A Third Kind Of New, On John Fitch Boulevard
The third node in this story doesn't look like a restaurant at all if you're driving past it. Chester's Chicken lists an active South Windsor location at 1049 John Fitch Boulevard. It's a fried-chicken concept that operates nationally out of convenience stores rather than freestanding restaurants, built around double hand-breaded bone-in chicken, tenders, and sides like potato wedges and mac and cheese.
That format matters for how you'll actually encounter it. You're not going to plan a dinner out at Chester's the way you would at Burtons Grill or the new taqueria on Sullivan. You're going to notice it while you're already stopping for gas, and it's going to change what you order for lunch on a day you didn't plan to eat out at all. That's a genuinely different category of "new place to eat" than a sit-down restaurant or a coffee shop, and it's easy to miss if you're only watching the obvious commercial strips.
The Corner That's Still Just Renderings
The fourth address in this story hasn't opened yet, and as of this writing it still hasn't. Sally's Apizza, the New Haven-style pizza chain founded in 1938, lists South Windsor as "coming soon" on its own site, part of a 2026 expansion slate that also includes Boca Raton, Boston Seaport, Newington, Danbury, and Foxwoods.
The location itself has a paper trail. Hartford Business Journal reported in May 2025 that a Massachusetts-based developer, O'Evergreen LLC, an affiliate of O'Connell Development Group, filed plans for a 5,000-square-foot restaurant at the corner of Cedar Avenue and Buckland Road, on a 6-acre parcel that already holds a PeoplesBank branch. The plans call for three new buildings on that lot, including a Starbucks with a drive-thru and a Chipotle, in addition to the pizzeria. Zoning filings labeled the restaurant space "Sally's Apizza," and exterior renderings show the chain's signature red and white brick pattern.
Here's the detail that changes how you should read all of this: that corner is right next to the Shops at Evergreen Walk, but it isn't part of it. It's a separate construction project on a separate parcel. So even the one big food announcement tied to the Evergreen Walk area isn't actually happening inside the shopping center itself. It's happening on the lot next door, and it still hadn't broken through to an opening as of this summer.
What Didn't Move: Nevers Road On Saturday Mornings
Against all of that churn, one part of South Windsor's food scene has stayed exactly where it's always been. The South Windsor Farmers Market runs Saturdays from 9 a.m. to noon, June 6 through October 3 this season, at 220 Nevers Road, with more than 35 vendors selling produce, baked goods, and specialty foods each week. It's running right now, this weekend included.
A short drive away on historic Main Street, Bordua Farms has been farming more than 100 acres in the Connecticut River Valley since 1990. The farm runs an 18-week CSA program with pickup at its barn at 1528 Main Street, offering three separate windows each week: Tuesday and Thursday from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m., and Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon. Beyond the CSA, there's a farm stand, pick-your-own flowers, and a weekend coffee cart the family added to the operation, a small sign that even the steadiest part of South Windsor's food economy keeps finding small ways to grow.
The contrast is the whole point. Sullivan Avenue, John Fitch Boulevard, and the Cedar and Buckland corner are all moving on a fast, unpredictable timeline. A storefront that was empty in January can be serving tacos by March. Nevers Road and Bordua Farms run on the same slow, seasonal clock they always have, opening in June and closing in October, year after year.
The Map You Actually Need Now
If you've lived in South Windsor long enough to have a go-to order at Evergreen Walk, that habit still works. Nothing there has really changed except one tenant swap that hasn't even opened yet. But if your sense of "what's new" stopped updating sometime last year, you're missing an entire block of Sullivan Avenue, a convenience-store chicken counter on John Fitch, and a construction lot at Cedar and Buckland that's quietly become the next thing to watch. For a town this size, that's four separate storylines running at the same time, and none of them are waiting for the others to catch up.
