Vernon's Fall Has Moved Out to Hartford Turnpike

This Saturday, October 10, starts at 11 a.m. at the Rockville Public Library on Union Street, where Lucky Duck Puppets is putting on a Halloween show. In it, Goldilocks finds a monster under the bed where the three bears used to be. At 1 p.m., Rockville Baptist Church starts its Fall Fest at 825 Hartford Turnpike, with live music, snacks, games and crafts. The same day, Arts Center East at 709 Hartford Turnpike is teaching a Halloween acrylic painting workshop. The newest restaurant in town, at 200 Hartford Turnpike, is open until 10 p.m. on Saturdays.

Only the first of those stops is downtown. The others share one road. From now through Thanksgiving weekend, most of Vernon's calendar sits on Hartford Turnpike, the local name for Route 30, and the house numbers work as a route map.

The Downtown Series Wrapped in July

The summer was centered on Rockville. The Vernon Cultural District's first Meet on the Street festival series ended July 16, according to the district's August newsletter. Our summer recap of Vernon covered how that downtown programming came together.

The Cultural District hasn't gone quiet. Its fall event is indoors, a single day of murder-mystery dinner theater called "Death Takes a Bow," held at the library on October 10 at 2 and 6 p.m. The Acme Mystery Company performs, Beckers Catering serves the meal, and tickets are $85. Guests can question suspects and follow clues, or they can just watch. Apart from that, the recurring fall events are run by organizations with Route 30 addresses: a church, an arts center, and the historical society's museum.

Route 30 by House Number

Address Who's there What's on this fall
200 Hartford Turnpike Taste of African Cuisine Opened with a ribbon-cutting October 2
520 Hartford Turnpike Vernon Coffee Roasters and The King's Court, in Vernon Commons 3,000 square feet of added seating since May
709 Hartford Turnpike Arts Center East Two exhibits through October 31, weekly workshops, Holiday Artisan Fair in November
734 Hartford Turnpike Vernon Historical Society Museum hours, then the Craft Fair November 28–29
825 Hartford Turnpike Rockville Baptist Church Fall Fest October 10, rain date October 17

The road's newest addition sits at the low end of the numbers.

200 Hartford Turnpike Is the Newest Address

On Friday, October 2, Mayor Dan Champagne and members of the Town Council joined owners Irene Acheampong and Ernest Nyarko to cut the ribbon at Taste of African Cuisine. The restaurant describes its food as "west African flavors."

The restaurant's menu includes jollof rice, waakye made with rice and beans, fufu with soup, and banku. Everything is cooked to order, for pickup or delivery. Patch's opening report lists these hours:

  • Tuesday through Thursday, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.
  • Friday, 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.
  • Saturday, 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Saturday has the latest closing time, which makes it the easiest night to fit in a meal after the Fall Fest or the 6 p.m. dinner-theater seating.

520 Added a Room

Vernon Coffee Roasters opened in May 2022 in the Vernon Commons plaza. In mid-March, the space next door came open. The shop took out the wall between them and added seating. The expansion, called The King's Court, added 3,000 square feet and opened in May, and the menu grew along with it. The Connecticut Scoop's report on the opening describes a lounge-style dining area.

Before the expansion, the shop was a place to grab a coffee and go. Now it has seats for a group, which counts for more in October than it did in July.

709 and 734 Carry the Calendar Into November

These two addresses run the longest stretch of the fall season.

Arts Center East is showing two exhibits that run September 26 through October 31. "Rooted in Fiber" features textile and fiber work, and "Art of Abstraction" explores abstract art. The class schedule includes a session most weeks this month:

  • October 10: Halloween acrylic painting workshop
  • October 14: mosaic goldfinch workshop
  • October 20: Zentangle class
  • October 21: pocket-journal workshop
  • October 27: life-drawing session

The center's biggest event of the season comes after the exhibits close. The Holiday Artisan Fair is in its 12th year and brings in more than 60 local and regional makers. The events page lists jewelry, pottery, fiber work, woodwork, home décor and specialty foods. The fair runs over two long weekends, November 12–15 and November 19–22. Hours are 1 to 5 p.m. Thursday and Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday. The center's quarterly Poetry Rocks! reading series also returns December 6.

Up the road at 734, the Vernon Historical Society takes over Thanksgiving weekend. Its 2026 Craft Fair runs Saturday, November 28, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and Sunday, November 29, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The society has been taking crafter registrations and donations of Nearly New items for the sale. Until then, the museum keeps short hours: Thursdays 10 a.m. to noon and 2 to 4 p.m., plus the second and fourth Sundays from 2 to 4 p.m. The society has posted that the museum will be closed October 11 and open October 25.

The two fairs share no organizer. Still, they run back to back at addresses 25 numbers apart over three straight weekends, and the historical society's fair starts the Saturday after the Arts Center East fair ends.

The Two Good Reasons to Leave Route 30

Two outdoor events on October 17 are worth the drive away from the corridor.

At 10 a.m., the historical society leads a walking tour at the Old Burial Ground on Bamforth Road called "Remembering our Local Patriots: Stories of Service and Sacrifice in the American Revolution." The rain date is Sunday, October 18, at 10 a.m.

At 1 p.m., a free 90-minute hike climbs to Echo Ridge at Valley Falls Park, 300 Valley Falls Road. It ends with refreshments and a tour of the Heritage Center at 345 Valley Falls Road. The start times leave about two hours between the two, enough for lunch.

October 17 is also the rain date for the Rockville Baptist Fall Fest. If rain cancels this Saturday's event, all three could fall on the same day.

October Through Thanksgiving Weekend, in Order

  1. October 9–12, overnight: Route 31 sewer-upgrade restoration between Loehr Road and Route 30. Milling is scheduled for Friday and Saturday nights, October 9–10, and paving for Sunday and Monday nights, October 11–12, weather permitting. Milling on Sunrise Drive is the one daytime exception. Expect lane closures and delays at the Route 30 end.
  2. October 10: puppet show at 11 a.m. and dinner theater at 2 and 6 p.m. at the library, the Fall Fest at 825 at 1 p.m., and the painting workshop at 709.
  3. October 17: Old Burial Ground tour at 10 a.m. and the Valley Falls hike at 1 p.m.
  4. October 27: life drawing at Arts Center East. The town calendar also lists a Halloween Trunk or Treat at 4:30 p.m.
  5. October 31: last day for "Rooted in Fiber" and "Art of Abstraction."
  6. November 6–7: St. Bernard's Christmas Bazaar, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., at 25 St. Bernard's Terrace.
  7. November 12–15 and 19–22: Holiday Artisan Fair at 709.
  8. November 28–29: Vernon Historical Society Craft Fair at 734.

What's Coming to Route 30 Next

Two more Hartford Turnpike projects are underway, though neither is open. In July, Patch reported construction underway at 64 Hartford Turnpike on a proposed building for CT Dental Associates. Farther up the numbers, a proposed Nepalese restaurant with a drive-up window at 1189 Hartford Turnpike was still in front of Planning and Zoning as of Patch's August 5 report. For now, it's a proposal on the zoning agenda.

If both projects go through, the stretch of Route 30 with something open would run from 64 up to 1189, wider than the 200-to-825 span that covers this fall.

When businesses open and community groups schedule events along Route 30, that tells you something about what a home near the corridor offers day to day.
